When it comes to engagement photography shoots, clients usually have a ton of questions but often find answers difficult to come by. To ensure you have all your doubts cleared, as expert photographers in Newmarket, ON, Images by Robert have answered some of the most frequently asked questions about engagement photography shoots.

1. Why is an engagement session important?
An engagement shoot will help you understand what to expect on the wedding day. You will learn a little about posing and the shooting pace. It’s a great time to get photos done for your “save-the-date” cards, a wedding slideshow, signature frame, guest book album. It’s also nice to have professional photos of the two of you not in wedding attire.

2. Where should we do our photoshoot?
I can recommend lots of beautiful locations in Ontario. But it’s also nice to do the photos in a place that is meaningful to you. Maybe where you first met or where you like to spend time on the weekends. These photos will be a beautiful reminder of this special time leading up to the wedding.

3. When is the best time for an engagement shoot?
The best light is in the morning or late afternoon (about 2-3 hrs before sunset). Every season has its own unique lighting and quality. I especially like the fall for engagement shoots. I just love the layers and textures of the clothing. The crisp fall air and the beautiful golden afternoon light.

4. Will you tell us how to pose?
Yes, I always give clear directions and suggestions for the photos. I like to shoot a mix of posed and candid photos. Only I can see what’s in the lens, so I’m going to give you the guidance and directions so you will have the best photos.

5. How many photos can we expect from our session?
You can expect about 100 beautiful images, but that always depends on the photographer you hire. All photos will be retouched, cropped and colour corrected. The images all belong to you and are perfect for “save-the-date” cards, table settings, signing book at the wedding. And just a fantastic memory of the two of you.

6. What should we wear for an engagement photo session?
This question deserves its own article! I always say “business casual” is a nice look. But honestly, if you wear what you feel good in, the photos will be great.

Clothes should fit well. Avoid bold patterns. Layers are always nice. And a pop of colour is always nice. My favourite accent colour is red (romantic, unexpected, bold and always in style)

7. What is a pre-engagement shoot consultation?
Before your session, we’ll meet for about thirty minutes to discuss location, props, outfits, themes, styles, and other creative ideas. I love to hear any specifics you desire and how we can make your creative ideas a reality. We’ll also discuss any purchases you are interested in for wall displays, and gifts and any payments toward those can be made in advance at this time
